A V.I.P.

The
world's largest sand mass, Fraser Island, is situated at the southern end
of the Great Barrier Reef.
Its links with the reef extend through Break sea
Spit, a submarine extension of Fraser Island, which extends 35 kilometres
towards Lady Elliot Island, the most southern cay of the reef.
Sitting on
the edge of the continental shelf, Fraser Island protects the mainland
from the worst buffeting of the cyclones and storms of the Coral Sea and
provides safe passage for small ships. |
The
island is 124 kilometres long with an average width of 14 kilometres and
23 kilometres at it's widest. The sand dunes on the island reach up to a
height of 240 meters.
Fraser Island is a magnificent mosaic of lakes, sandblows, swamps,
wetlands and beaches. Even though the island is totally sand, it supports
a great diversity of plant life, including dense rainforest and towering
Satinay trees, open scrubs and low shrubs.

Huge
volumes of fresh water add to the island's attractions. This water fills
the many lakes on the island and runs into crystal clear streams that flow
out onto the beach at many locations.
The
lakes on Fraser Island are unique. These lakes are known as perched lakes,
that is they sit or perch above sea level and even though they are in pure
sand, they hold water.
This is because the humus produced from thousands
of years of decaying vegetation which formed a clay-like lining to the
lakes that is impervious to water.
One
of the most popular lakes is Lake McKenzie. This is a large lake, around
10 meters deep, filled with crystal clear water and surrounded with pure
white silica sand.
Lake Wabby is another lake that has unique features.
It is one of the few lakes that support life, (fish, turtles etc) and it
is slowly being swallowed up by the large sandblow on its northern side.
